Nicola Brown work

Sunday, 26 July 2009

Nicola was born in Edinburgh and now lives in the borders. She is inspired by everything and anything and just love creating. Nicola's work is based upon dyslexia and the fragmentation of words.

In her words...I wanted to create material that resembled pages of books and layers. I did this by using cotton organdie and paper nylon as they are easily sculptied. I used lazer cutting as i wanted to be able to see through layers of material making the printed words distorted and so resemble the idea of dyslexia.

Very delicate and beautiful, I like the use of words, layering and threads trough her work.

MIJAE brilliant brick's work

Thursday, 2 July 2009

Everything started with a brick…I met Mijae at the Chelsea textile Degree Show, She was very nice and took her time to explain about her project. I can see why she gets so inspired by bricks. Not only they are everywhere is London, but the colors, textures they can achieve over the years are extraordinary!! Remember some of this bricks can be as old as 300 years, or much more…
I like the simplicity of her work, they way she transfer her drawing onto the textiles, the textures and subtle colors of the dresses.

In her words…This is about Bricks which are my favorite objects in london. My first sight of london from window side seat in the airplane was the red-brown bricks land. The city where I came to spend my youth to find out something precious was full of bricks, well made and has a thousand of colours and patterns. When I faced on choosing a theme of my final collection, I looked back upon the past five years in London, and the first moment of bricks turned back into my mind very naturally.

It was not necessary to research about bricks as other project, because they are already my favorite object in london. They exist where I often go to , in the books and drawings and photos which I've always loved. I kept drawing about the patterns and colours on the white paper with pastel and water. To create the detail from its many hard voyages, I used many of different materials for scratching and blurring. I worked on digital print and silk screen print in both.

And I decided to make garments with the fabric, not only for the reason that i love clothing, closer to the reason that i wanted to see the link between bricks and human. I am inspired by bricks in London, not anywhere else.

Morley College {TEXTILES ADVANCED WORKSHOP}

I am so much looking forward to the TEXTILES ADVANCED WORKSHOP exhibition this year. It was at Morley where I learned all about textiles, and where I met wonderful friends and people, Kate and me met there, a long time ago…plus Hilary, Elaine, Kay, Sally, and so many others….The best thing at this courses are the teachers, Alex Mayer, Marian Lynch, Deborah Brown, etc… they are very supportive and have a great knowledge of the different printing, and dying techniques. It is a very nice environment where to learn and achieve your goals. The courses are attracting more and more people every year to the point where they have created extra workshops and short courses for Summer, (see their website for more information).
